Geometric Mural Project

Back to Math II

Backround:

The department of Qualcomm invited us to submit a proposal for the design of a SCALE mural to decorate their corporate headquarters. They strongly believe that one of the functions of art is to instruct its viewers. Reflecting this opinion, they asked us to incorporate geometric concepts and principals into the design of the mural as much as possible. They also requested that the mural represents a "theme". Besides these requirements, they have given us a complete artistic freedom.

We had to prepare a complete proposal, including a blueprint, a letter to the selection committee describing our work and an estimated budget. We where going to present 18 of of our mural designs to Qualcomm, they then will choose 12 mural designs which we will paint at full scale as a class. We gave a presentation to the members of Qualcomm and then they voted on the mural. Qualcomm didn't choose my mural but i still got to paint another mural with my group which was Ana, Iza and Kassandra and our mural was designed by Ana and it was called The Sky is the Limit.

Requirements:

All the representations of our murals must satisfy the requirements below

1. The mural must contain each of the following shapes: Equilateral Triangle, Right Triangle, Circle, Square, Rectangle, Parallelogram, Rhombus, Kite, and Trapezoid.

2. At least 70% of the area of the mural must consist of shapes from the list.

3. The mural must contain at least 40 shapes from the list (you will have to use them more than once).

Deliverables:

Blueprint: Should be completed on graph paper and drawn to scale. Use markers or colored pencils to show the color scheme you plan using.

Letter: Describe your mural: why the scene or landscape you chose to represent is an appropriate choice for a school, how you think it will affect students seeing it every day, what sources you drew on for artistic inspiration, and what elements of your design are most original.

Estimated Budget: Prepare a detailed estimate of the costs of painting your mural at full scale. Include estimates of the paint cost, drawing on the experience with the small-scale replica. Also include estimates of other materials costs (brushes, ladder rentals, drop-cloths), labor costs and appropriate sales tax. You will need to calculate the area of each of the shapes you include in your mural- and the total area of the shapes.

Project Reflection:

In this project i learned several things one of them was team work. I didn't like to work with others because i wanted everything perfect and sometimes i feel that my team is going to ruin our work, but it wasn't the case my team really worked hard and at first i got very stressed because.
